The timer problem in mobile strategy

The timer problem in mobile strategy

June 15, 2026 · Markus Vogel

I love a tight strategy game, but mobile ones keep sabotaging themselves with timers. You finish a great mission, you're ready for the next, and the game tells you to come back in forty minutes. It breaks the one thing strategy games need most: momentum.

Ironhold Command is a good example of both sides. The actual battles are excellent, full of tense resource juggling, but the gaps between campaigns deflate that energy. I kept wanting to keep playing and the game kept telling me to wait.

The frustrating part is that it's a solvable design choice, not a limitation. Plenty of games pace unlocks without hard timers and feel better for it. When the strategy is strong, artificial waiting just gets in the way of the fun.

My honest tip: play these in short, focused bursts rather than binges, and you'll feel the timers less. But I'd still love to see more developers trust their core loop enough to drop them.
